URANIA Centre of Research carries
out medical and industrial diagnostics as regards
the entomological and arachnological fields . Two
laboratories of this Centre deal with the finding
of insects and mites indoors:
1. E.D.P.A Laboratory treats exclusively
research and diagnostics in the medical sector, by
using a method called exactly “ Esame Diretto
delle Polveri Ambientali “ (E.D.P.A) .
Through this method, consisting in processing housedust
collected from the floor of the rooms where the patient
lives, the presence of pathogenic arthropods causing
dermatopathies or pneumopathies is recorded. The centres
of larval development are found in order to target
a possible treatment of environmental disinfestation.
Such a method is applied in an excellent way in the
dermatological sector, any time it is necessary to
individuate or exclude an environmental origin by
arthropods in the onset of a dermatopathy.
2. E.D.P.A.I. Laboratory treats
exclusively research and diagnostics in the industrial
sector, by using a method called “Esame diretto
delle Polveri Ambientali Industriali” (E.D.P.A.I.).
Through this method, consisting in processing the
environmental dust collected from the floor of industrial
premises, the presence of infestant arthropods detrimental
to goods is recorded. The centres of larval development
are found in order to target a possible treatment
of environmental disinfestation. Such a method is
applied in an excellent way in all the premises of
the agroindustrial sector (warehouses, manufacturing
premises and so on), as well as systematically, as
a preventive measure against both infestant or pathogenic
arthropods, on trains, ships, hotels, restaurants,
supermarkets and so on.
In the dermatological sector, without
any doubt E.D.P.A. has its precise function in helping
the doctor to better understand the origin of lesions.
URANIA Centre of Research performs this diagnostics
service in a very simple and fast way: the doctor
prescribes the E.D.P.A to his patient, to be sent

he waits for the response of the exam. It is up to
the patient to collect the housedust, exclusively
with broom and dustpan, by brooming the whole surface
of the floor of any room, after having shaken blankets,
cushions, carpets, wood-wormed chairs and so on, put
it into small containers to be well labelled with
thwe names of the rooms (for instance, double bedroom,
single bedroom, livingroom and so on). They must be
sent, by mail or a parcel service, to Perugia URANIA
Centre, from where, in 24-72 hours' time, the patient
will receive the response of the examination per e-mail
or the way he has requested, together with the advice
to solve the possible environmental infestation.
If the examination has had a positive result and the
patient has duly effected the strategy of intervention
advised, his dermatopathy will clear up in a few days.
